Leave it to Paparelli to give the audience a new look by keeping the traditional set but infusing modern music and contemporary teenage attitudes. The story is about the friendship between two teenage boys, Proteus (Nick Dillenburg) and Valentine (Andrew Veenstra). They remain good friends until they both fall in love with Silvie (Natalie Mitchell), the daughter of the Duke of Milan (Brent Harris). Proteus’ first love, Julia (Miriam Silverman) is devastated when she learns that Proteus has left her for Silvie. Very talented cast including a dog named Crab. “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” plays through Mar. 4 at the Lansburgh Theatre, 450 – 7th St. NW in the District. The McLean Community Players is presenting this Broadway classic at the Alden Theatre in the McLean Community Center on weekends through Feb. 11. “Man of La Mancha” is based on Miguel de Cervantes’ famous story about Don Quixote. In this local production, Mike Baker, Jr. takes on the role of Don Quixote with great confidence. Baker has a tremendous amount of acting and singing experience and it shows. The whole cast is extremely talented including Quixote’s sidekick Sancho, played by Nathan Tatro and the dramatic and exciting Aldonza, played by Janice Rivera. The musicians, under the direction of Walter McCoy, were exceptional adding to the very satisfying production directed by Don Peterson. “Man of La Mancha” is a musical everyone should see at least once. I’ve probably seen it a dozen times since it first opened in Broadway in 1965. However, in 1705 she wrote a hit play called, “The Bassett Table.” It has been adapted by playwright David Grimm and is being presented as “The Gaming Table,” at Folger Theatre in the District. The play takes place at the home of Lady Reveller (Julia Jesnick), where card games (gaming), played by wealthy ladies, have funny and complicated circumstances. There are four couples and servants and this is one very talented ensemble cast. Each cast member is memorable as are their costumes and wigs. Very smooth direction by Eleanor Holdridge. “The Gaming Table” is a very entertaining show and runs through March 4 at the Folger Theatre. I’m talking about the terrific two-person show at Arena Stage - - called “Red.” It’s the story of abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko (born Marcus Rothkowitz in Russia in 1903). He committed suicide in 1970. It’s no wonder he killed himself because someone with his artistic intensity, as portrayed by actor Ed Gero, would get burned out fast. The way Gero plays Rothko-and the interplay, however contentious, with his young assistant, Ken, played formidably by Patrick Andrews, is not to be missed! Playwright John Logan’s script as directed by Robert Falls gives great insight into the personality and demons of this magnificent large-canvas, boozing and smoking artist. But the teaming of well-known D.C. actor Gero and Chicago’s Andrews is so intense and riveting, one forgets it’s acting! “Red” is a co-production with Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. See this! “Red” closes on Mar. 11 at Arena Stage in the District. Call 202-485-3300 for information and tickets. Then you’ve got to see The Keegan Theatre’s production of Neil Simon’s “Laughter on the 23rd Floor.” Playing at the Church Street Theatre in the District one gets a pretty good idea of what it was like in 1953 for the writers of the NBC “Show of Shows,” starring Sid Caesar. The real names are not used and instead the writers in this story are working for the Max Prince Show. Ray Ficca plays Max Prince (or is it Caesar) to the hilt as do the other writers. Keegan regular Michael Innocenti is an absolute riot as Ira Stone, the hypochondriac jokester. There are seven other talents who play their roles wonderfully in this nuthouse. Wish I had time to name them all. Great direction job by Colin Smith. Do not miss this show!! “Laughter on the 23rd Floor” plays through Feb. 18. For information and tickets, call 703-892-0202. The Chateaubriand de L’Auberge comes with an assortment of fresh vegetables and is a must if you’re a beef person. The Dover sole sautéed with lobster, mushrooms and tomatoes is also outstanding. I must say, the seafood at Chez Francois is exceptional and the escargots are the best I’ve had. Another authentic dish is the Alsatian sauerkraut choucroute with smoked fish. There’s so much more---be sure to end your meal with either a soufflé or baked Alaska. I was really impressed that L’Auberge Chez Francois hasn’t changed and is still living up to its reputation. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner except on Mondays and there’s plenty of free, self-parking. For information and reservations, call 703-759-3800. Playing through Jan 29 at the H Street Playhouse in the District, Henrik Ibsen’s 1890 work, as adapted by Irishman Brian Friel and directed by Scena’s Robert McNamara, the play tells the story of the beautiful and calculating Hedda Gabler. Set in 1938 Oslo, Norway, Hedda, played by Kerry Waters, focuses the audience’s attention on her every move and expression with her voice and presence. Hedda has had flings in the past and actually in the present with Judge Brack (Jim Jorgensen) and writer, Eilert Lovborg (Eric Lucas) and is now married to the nice and somewhat innocent academician, George Tesman (Lee Ordeman). Hedda is jealous of the literary collaboration between Lovborg and Hedda’s beautiful childhood friend, Thea (Danielle Davy). Veteran actress Rena Cherry Brown plays George’s aunt, Juliana. Mary Suib rounds out the great cast as the maid, Bertha. “Hedda Gabler” is one of D.C.’s best productions! Call 703-683-2824 for information and tickets. Wilson. He studied and even taught in Italy this physical theatre which also uses masks. Appropriately, he has set “Romeo and Juliet” in Italy using the conflict between the Montague and Capulet families who want to keep the young lovers from marrying. In the hands of Wilson’s Commedia, it’s a wonderful slapstick show and not the usual downer of the tragedy of the young lovers. Tysons Corner Center, McLean, VA

There’s a great full-service Italian restaurant on the lower level at Tysons Corner Center called Brio Tuscan Grille. And what a huge menu of food and drink! When you park your car in the parking garage you can see the Brio sign at the entrance to the Mall. Believe me, once inside the restaurant, you’re in a different world. Brio is definitely a destination restaurant, The warm décor makes you feel at home, and now the food. You may want to start with one of Brio’s flatbread offerings, their version of pizza. The menu features Tuscan grille items such as chicken, lamb chops, pork chops and salmon, plus 13 pasta dishes including lobster and shrimp ravioli, lasagna, fettuccine Napoli and penne gorgonzola. Among the specialties are veal marsala, crab and shrimp cakes, shrimp risotto and a whole roasted chicken. And don’t forget the beef entrees such as artichoke crusted beef medallions, filet of beef topped with gorgonzola or a 14 oz. strip steak. My favorites are the lasagna and beef medallions with shrimp scampi. The salads are great, too. I might add that if you don’t see what you want, Executive Chef Eric Madson will make it for you as he did one night for me when I had a hankering for veal parmigiana. Genial manager Ramzi Lahboub was in charge the night I was there. Brio Tuscan Grille is a real Tuscan inspired restaurant. Patti (Kimberly Gilbert) has found religion and her hubby, Jeff (Will Gartshore) has other serious sexual issues he has mostly resolved. The other couple, Mo (Liz Mamana) and Brian (Chris Stezin) hasn’t had kids and he’s not in a hurry. Conflict, but funny, nevertheless. Wonderful, first-class acting drawing the Theater J audience into their lives. Joseph Thornhill plays many roles in this gem—especially an opening sort-of-standup thing. It’s a bustling full service restaurant with sandwiches, burgers and pizza, soups and salads, entrees and desserts. Whatever you have a hankering for, the American Tap Room has it, and as the name would indicate, features 40 beers on tap, a variety of bottled beers, a full bar and a martini bar. As important as the food and beverages are, the attention to service and management are outstanding. Frank Mitolo is Director of Operations and Sam Osta is the Manager. The night my wife and I were there, Kathleen Wilmot took care of our table. She suggested we start with a flight (sampling) of four tap beers which were Harpoon, Allagash, Bells and Palm. I never heard of them, but liked them all. Gosh, only 36 more to try. Among the entrees are garlic rubbed steaks, lobster mac & cheese, crab cakes, Chilean sea bass, boneless beef short ribs, sugar cane peanut shrimp and papparedelle pasta. I had the rib eye steak and my wife, the lobster mac and cheese. Both were terrific. The final test for us is always the question, “ would we return”? In the case of the American Tap Room, the answer is a resounding, “Yes!” The American Tap Room is located at 3101 Wilson Blvd., at the corner of Wilson and N. Highland. Set in 1962 Baltimore, “Hairspray” is a happy romp with an underlying message. The night I saw the show, the lead role of Tracy Turnblad, was played by understudy Kirstin Riegler and what a job she did! She took over at the last minute for Carolyn Cole who has since resumed the lead role. Local broadcaster Robert Aubry Davis has courageously taken on the role of Tracy’s mother, Edna, which is traditionally played by a large man. He did a nice job of hoofing and singing in this creation by Baltimore’s John Waters. You may remember John Travolta as Edna in the movie. Throughout the play, references are made to segregation and we see how Tracy confronts it. There’s a huge talented cast including a couple of show-stopping tunes by Motormouth Maybelle played by Nova Y. Payton. See this “Hairspray” at Signature before it ends on Jan. 29. In a glorious production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical, the Olney cast serves up a truly wonderful evening of enjoyment. In addition to Ms. Ball and her moving renditions of the many heartfelt songs, there are the kids—all seven of them—singing their hearts out. Ms. Ball as Maria, their governess, not only wins them over, but their father as well, Capt. Gaylord von Trapp. Set in 1938 Austria with Germany breathing down their necks, Capt. von Trapp makes a daring escape with Maria and the children. They are aided by the Nuns of the Nonnberg Abbey where Maria was a postulant for a short time until The Mother Abbess (Channez McQuay) decided she and her love of music belonged outside the Abbey. Other nuns playing a large role in Maria’s life were Sister Berte (Donna Migliaccio), Sister Sophia (Tracy Lynn Olivera) and Sister Margretta (Maria Engler). Bobby Smith is great as Capt. von Trapp’s friend, Max as is Jenna Sokolowski, playing Elsa Schraeder, who the Captain was going to marry until he met Maria. Great direction by Mark Waldrup and kudos to musical director, Christopher Youstra. “The Sound of Music,” will play at the Olney Music Theater until sometime in January. It’s a great, great show!! Don’t miss it!! As a founding Board member of SCES I was asked to select a menu for the Gala dinner. What a lovely experience. I’ve been to many tastings, but this Four Seasons tasting was the most elegant. I also brought my wife as she has been to many tastings at hotels all around the country in her former job as a national convention director. We met with assistant director of catering, Tina Nader, in a beautifully appointed dining area, who introduced us to Executive Chef Doug Anderson and Executive Sous Chef Dustin Willett. They presented two salad appetizers, three entrées and two dessert courses paired with appropriate wines. Both the presentation and the taste of the food were equally important. We selected a spinach salad with roasted pear slices, dates, dried cranberries, pecans, raisins and a shallot vinaigrette dressing. For the entrée we chose a miso glazed sea bass filet over a mushroom scallion risotto. And, we selected a plate of three small desserts as the final course which consisted of a chocolate cherry mousse dome, raspberry sorbet and a tower of raspberries. The Four Seasons is well known for its charity fund raisers and of course, weddings. The menu is easy to read and honed to perfection by Chef Will Artley. Remember that name—he’s a Chef to watch. Recently, my wife and I sampled many of Chef Artley’s dishes and wondered after each one, how he could top what we just had. We started with sliced heirloom tomatoes with a tarragon pesto and get this—the tomatoes were from his own garden. Then came perfectly sautéed scallops with a creamy fava bean risotto, Maryland rockfish filet over eggplant gnocchi in a white corn sauce, grilled beef tenderloin over roasted garlic mashed potatoes, roasted grouper over a cold farro salad with raisins, cauliflower and chick peas. Each dish had a distinctive sauce that left you wanting more. You won’t believe what we had for dessert---a chocolate milkshake and a slice of an ice cream Snickers bar. The Evening Star Café has a definite family-friendly atmosphere encouraged by its personable general manager, Sean Alves. The star at The Evening Star is Chef Artley and his obvious passion for cooking and knowing what his customers like. The exact address of the restaurant is 2000 Mt. Vernon Ave. and the phone number for reservations is 703-549-5051. I remember the days when the Hot Shoppe on Spout Run and The Alpine on Lee Highway were the destination restaurants of choice. Now, however, we have fine dining restaurants like Pinzimini’s in The Westin Arlington Gateway Hotel at 801 N. Glebe Road. Recently I ran into The Westin’s Nicole Charles and Orcun Turkay and then I got a call from their executive chef Graham Fontes, so I had to see what’s happening. Chef Graham prides himself on a menu that is farm to table—fresh ingredients from local farmers and ranchers and I soon found out what he was talking about. But first let me tell you about the best tasting oysters on the half shell I’ve ever had. Chef Graham flavors them with limoncello granite and they are absolutely scrumptious as are his charbroiled oysters with an herb parmesan butter. I also had to try his brick oven Margherita pizza and discovered it takes three days to make the dough and well worth the effort. Virginia’s Grayson Farms supplies the beef and pork which are free of hormones and antibiotics. Chef Graham’s beef filet entrée with a carmelized shallot mushroom ragu served over a root vegetable mash is outstanding. There are also pasta dishes and of course, Pinzimini’s signature grilled salmon and many more selections. For an unusual and refreshing dessert, try the heirloom tomato sorbet. For more information and reservations, call Pinzimini’s at 703-537-4201 and check the website at www.pinzimini.com

NATALIE’S ORCHID ISLAND JUICE COMPANY
Remember this name, Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company and look for it in your grocery store. If you want to taste what real fruit juice should taste like, then Natalie’s should be on your shopping list. I have to say that until recently I was unaware of Natalie’s and honestly, I didn’t know how good a fruit juice could be. Natalie’s is a Florida based company where Marygrace Sexton, with her baby daughter Natalie at her side, started picking oranges in 1989. Natalie’s is now a full blown family business and Marygrace says what makes her juices different is that the oranges are squeezed the same day they’re picked. Natalie’s products include orange and grapefruit juices, honey tangerine, lemon, lime, lemonade and limeade. And, just recently they have added blackberry limeade and mango peach. Delicious. So, next time you’re shopping for a fruit juice, give Natalie’s a try. It’s a special institution in the District now run by the fourth generation, Billy A. Martin, Jr. In fact, Martin’s is where John F. Kennedy, who frequently dined there, proposed marriage to Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953 in Booth #3. Martin’s has been, and is, the home of many politicians and Washington celebrities, but has maintained the neighborhood tavern atmosphere. Many of its customers are Georgetown residents who walk to the restaurant. But Martin’s is more than its historical reputation. Along with the current owner, there are employees like host Bill Forte, server Nasirul Islam and others inside the kitchen---and outside who have been working there for years. A young manager, Chris Hollenbeck, who has been there for just a short time, told me how loyal and supportive Billy is to his employees. Be sure to say “hello” to the genial general manager, Mayu Horie. The menu is substantial with favorites on the weekends, including Fridays, such as slow roasted prime rib of beef. Another must is the crab cake platter and oysters on the half shell. There are lots of great sounding appetizers like artichoke cheese fritters and little taverns. The salads come in two sizes and the entrees are quite varied from meatloaf to pot roast to fish and chips to filet mignon to pasta. Save room for dessert, particularly the homemade bread pudding with a bourbon caramel sauce. I cannot praise Billy Martin’s Tavern enough! Fleming’s hosts monthly wine dinners with different themes and this one, once again, showed the versatility of Chef Jackie and educated me about South African wines. We started with two tasty appetizers, skewered barbequed shrimp and lightly fried samosas which were served with a delightfully refreshing Raats Chenin Blanc unwooded, Stellenbosch 2009. Next was a green bean and grape tomato salad, paired with a lovely Glenelly Estate Chardonnay, Stellenbosch, 2010, followed by a fabulous tomato and lamb stew, served with a perfect Thelema Merlot, Stellenbosch, 2008, a very nice choice. The entrée was a mixed grill of beef and lobster tail over a savory South African yellow rice with raisins. The entrée was paired just right with a Rudi Shultz Syrah, Stellenbosch, 2007 and lastly, for dessert, so good I wanted to lick the plate, a South African Custard Pie, served with a mildly sweet Klein Constantia Vin de Constance, 2005. I’m beginning to think that Fleming’s is offering the best wine dinners around. The next one is Friday, July 15 and will feature “Comfort Cooking” with wines from California. Fleming’s is located in the Marriott Courtyard Hotel at 1960 Chain Bridge Rd. (at Rt. 123 and International Drive),Tyson’s Corner. The experience began at 6 p.m. with dinner by Chef Dennis Marron. He offers a tasting menu with one to six courses or you can order from an a la carte menu---or, you can mix and match. I chose several items from each, starting with Oysters Rockefeller, which were the best I’ve had anywhere, and a flavorful lobster strudel. Then came a savory onion soup, a green salad with asparagus and steamed mussels served with Chef Marron’s special frites. From the tasting menu I had delicious and perfectly grilled soft shell crabs and ended with a selection of coconut delights. The menus are quite creative and reflect Chef Marron’s years of experience. The Grille is just one of the dining areas---there is another more intimate Dining Room with the same menus. On Tuesday evenings, after 8 p.m., The Grille highlights its piano bar with well-known pianist Bob Smith. Smith hosts four hours of open-mike performances by local, amateur and professional singers. Trumpeter Robert Vetter plays with Smith as they accompany the singers such as Marilyn Dimas, a superb mezzo soprano and exciting tenor Mike Blaney who sings both opera and Broadway selections. Some of the amateur singers were darn good, too. And, get this, the night I was there, a 10 year old, going on 40, young lad came in with his dad and blew us away with this trumpet playing. Remember this name: Geoffrey Gallante—he’s terrific. Bob Smith also plays solo for an hour on Friday and Saturday nights followed by open-mike for three hours. The Grille is a great place on any night thanks to its genial general manager, William Smith. The Grille Restaurant & Piano Bar in The Morrison House is located at 116 S. Alfred St. in Alexandria. This is one first-class operation and one of the handsomest restaurants I’ve seen. Its dining area, including the piano bar, is beautifully appointed and the private dining rooms are state of the art. There’s also an open kitchen, which I like, headed by executive chef, Dane Scott. For a pre-opening wine dinner, we were served seven tasting courses paired with appropriate wines. The restaurant has over 100 bottles on its wine list and more than half are available by the glass. There are 18 Seasons 52 restaurants around the country and each focuses on healthy and fresh ingredients. They are known for their flatbreads that are topped with such items as roasted artichokes, pineapple, feta cheese, shrimp, spinach, peppers and goat cheese. Delicious!! (Forget pizza!) The entrees were served on a cedar plank and honestly, the Copper River Salmon and lemongrass sea scallops were the best I’ve had. Other entrée items were the mesquite lamb chop, Manchester Farms quail breast and a wonderful Sonoma goat cheese ravioli. Imagine, this was just a sample of what will be on Seasons 52’s full menu. Well, try Trattoria Da Franco in Alexandria at 305 S. Washington St. (at Duke). For 30 years Franco Abbruzzetti has been the owner/chef at this location. Once a month the restaurant has opera night. Last Sunday, dinner was from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and then 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., there’s a wonderful show of opera and Broadway songs. The popular Michael Blaney emcee’s and sings in his fine tenor voice. He has sung with the Met in New York and the Washington National Opera in D.C. Well-known keyboard artist, Bob Smith, formerly with the U.S. Army Band, accompanies the singers and honestly, he can play anything. Mezzo soprano Marilyn Dimas and soprano Sofiya Schug charmed the diners with their vocal talents. And, sometimes. Franco himself, will charm the folks with Italian tunes. Call Trattoria Da Franco to find out the date of the next opera night at 703-548-9338. Not only is it all sleeked-up and modernized—it has a new name, Ping by Charlie Chiang. Mr. and Mrs. (Christiana) Chiang are still the proprietors with that same personal touch as evidenced by their management and service staff. Ping is Chinese food as Christiana puts it, with a “twist”. But first let me start with Ping’s sushi and sashimi—some of the best I’ve ever had and without a doubt, the most beautiful presentation I’ve seen. Then came a delicious hot and sour seafood soup with crab, scallops and shrimp and Sichuan dumplings, one with a red oil sauce and one with a sesame peanut sauce. Here are just a few of the traditional Chinese dishes with that “twist” I mentioned: red pepper rosemary chicken nuggets in an aged black vinegar based sauce; steak and broccoli using thick slices of choice flat iron steak cooked in an oyster-soy sauce: a whole red snapper, fried, doused in a hot wok-fired sweet and sour sauce and an incredible fried rice with mozzarella cheese. For dessert—the final Ping “twist”---tempura cheesecake-- which is cheesecake dipped in tempura batter and flash fried. You won’t believe how good it is. As I said, every dish has a “twist”—either in the way it’s prepared or the seasonings or the marriage of different ingredients. With that said, Ping’s remains Chinese. There’s a lot to explore at Ping’s which, by the way, also has a full bar. Ping by Charlie Chiang is located at 4060 Campbell Ave. in Shirlington. Well, Kilroy’s in Springfield is my latest discovery and what a find it is! The price?---only $15.95 and that includes oysters on the half shell and steamed mussels. Kilroy’s is the neighborhood restaurant we all wish we had in our own back yard. It’s really not that far—take Braddock Road, off Columbia Pike, cross Backlick and just as you get to the Beltway, turn left onto Port Royal Road and you’re there. Back to the food---perfectly cooked eggs Benedict with homemade Hollandaise sauce, made to order omelets, bacon, sausage, grits, assortment of fruits and veggies, hash brown potatoes, Caesar salad, cabbage rolls, lasagna and a pasta station. A selection of desserts including a fountain of chocolate---however, I couldn’t resist the Belgian waffle station. Oh, so good with maple syrup, strawberry sauce and whipped cream. I met a number of people who eat at Kilroy’s several times a week and I can understand why. It’s a real friendly place with dining rooms on the left and a sports bar on the right with about 20 TV’s. I took a look at the regular menu and I can assure you, I’ll be returning to Kilroy’s to try some of their signature dishes, also very reasonable. For more information and reservations, call Kilroy’s at 703-321-7733 and check the website at www.kilroys.com.

CARMINE’s - - Legendary in New York, now in D.C.

Open here in D.C. for less than a year, New York’s famous family style Italian restaurant, Carmine’s, has hit the ground running in the hot Penn Quarter area on 7th Street NW in the District. The thing to remember about Carmine’s is to bring a big appetite or better yet, bring people with you. It’s a family style restaurant with huge platters which they warn, “all portions feed two to four people.” I’m a veal parmigiana nut and Carmine’s didn’t disappoint There are all kinds of hot and cold appetizers and remember, one appetizer will feed two to four. The salads are beautiful and monstrous. In addition to every kind of pasta you can think of, there’s a wonderful selection of seafood, chicken and beef entrees. And, remember, each dish feeds two to four. By the way, they have some pretty interesting sounding hero sandwiches and an extensive catering menu. Carmine’s is a busy place with a bustling bar and valet parking is available. There’s a New York-friendly atmosphere exhibited by genial general manager, Kristopher Diemar. Located at 1550 Wilson Boulevard in Rosslyn, Piola is a big place with, of course, a brick oven to showcase more than 50 kinds of pizza. There are also other dishes—appetizers, salads, pasta specials with homemade sauces and other chicken, fish and beef entrees. But, it’s the pizza that makes them a specialty restaurant. Being a pizza purist, I ordered the classic Margherita, but then decided to add sausage, mushrooms and chopped tomatoes. Scrumptious! And, being a growing boy, I made room for Piola’s homemade profiteroles, homemade cream puffs with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Piola actually means “meeting place” and it certainly has a friendly atmosphere. Piola was started by two brothers in Italy about 20 years ago and there are now Piola’s in seven countries including the United States. Lucky for us we have one in our back yard here in Arlington. As depicted in the show, “Gauguin: Maker of Myth,” he was known for blending fact with fiction and often used personal tales to tell his exotic stories through art. His stoneware ceramic sculpture, Oviri, is a Tahitian name meaning savage which Gauguin thought best described him and which he used extensively. Even though Gauguin was a renowned artist, he considered himself a work in progress and without doubt, was a man ahead of his time. His concern was the demise of Western culture. He was a philosopher and saw himself as a martyr. In one painting, he depicts himself as Christ. Tahiti, then a French colony, was the center of his interest. His paintings reveal a sensuality in his female nudes. The Gauguin exhibit will be at the National Gallery of Art through June 5. For more information, call 202-737-4215 and check the website at www.nga.gov. The well-known authentic Spanish restaurant, Taberna Del Alabardero, just kicked off it’s new Sunday buffet brunch featuring food from various areas of Spain. Last month, cuisine from the Galicia region was featured and I can’t wait to see what’s next. If you’ve never been to Taberna Del Alabardero, gong to a Sunday brunch will give you a good idea of what dining in Spain is like. CHANG’S CHINA BISTRO

P.F. Chang’s China Bistro is not your “pick an item from column A or Column B” type Chinese restaurant. And, yes, it’s a chain restaurant, but I like that because if you go to P.F. Chang’s in Arlington then go to other locations, the food will taste the same. Consistency is what you want when you find dishes you really like. Arlington’s P.F. Chang’s is a fun place and always busy, a sign of good food and good customer service. I suspect this is due to operating partner Rene Paglinawan and manager Kim McDonald. The menu is very easy to read and describes each dish so you know for sure what you’re getting. You can easily make a meal of small plates which include such items as chicken or vegetable lettuce wraps, spring rolls, dumplings, spare ribs, Sichuan chicken flatbread and more. Of course, there are the popular soups, wonton, egg drop, hot and sour and Chang’s chicken noodle. For main dishes the menu is divided into chicken and duck, beef, pork and lamb, seafood, noodles and rice and vegetarian. They also have a nice selection of gluten free dishes. My favorite dishes at Chang’s are salt and pepper calamari, crispy green beans, spring roles, all of the soups, Hong Kong beef with snow peas, ginger chicken with broccoli, mu shu pork, crispy honey shrimp, oolong marinated sea bass, vegetarian fried rice, Ma Po tofu and for dessert, banana spring rolls. Surprising to many, is the extensive beverage menu with so many specialty drinks. Being a Manhattan guy, I can attest to their top quality bourbon. There’s also an organic agave Margarita and an Absolut pepper vodka bloody Mary and many other special creations by Chang’s bartender, Casey Gray. P.F. Chang’s China Bistro is located at 901 N. Glebe Rd., just a few block north of Ballston. Located right in the heart of this quaint village, the Occoquan Inn also houses the popular Virginia Grill and the fun Down Under tavern. The menu at the main restaurant is first class with items such as Virginia peanut soup, French onion soup and baked mushrooms stuffed with cream cheese and bacon. Entrée selections include their very popular prime rib, Cornish hens, crab cakes, scallops, veal marsala, seafood fettucini, New York strip steak and on occasion, broiled lobster tail. A more casual menu is offered in the Virginia Grill such as nachos and cheese, popcorn shrimp and potato skins for starters. Then there’s a full menu of sandwiches, soups and salads which, if the weather is nice, can be served outside on the adjacent deck overlooking the river. The bar Down Under is a fun spot, particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings where there’s live music after 9:30 p.m. The main restaurant also features a really good Sunday morning buffet featuring omeletes and one of my favorites, sausage gravy with biscuits. Gary Savage is the genial proprietor and Kevin Oswalt, the creative partner-chef. In the popular Del Ray section of Alexandria is a wonderful Southern Italian restaurant called Sapore Italian Ristorante and Pizzeria. This is Southern Italian cooking at its best. Sapore is owned by the Dominguez family with a kitchen staff from a popular Italian restaurant in D.C., Enzio’s, which closed last year. The entire staff is now at Sapore’s. What a coup! This allows John and George Dominguez to concentrate on service and producing a welcoming environment. I had pizza for an appetizer and it was the next best thing to my favorite Brooklyn pizza. Their calamari is lightly fried, delightfully tender and served with a homemade marinara sauce. Being a soup lover, I had to try both the vegetable and lentil, each with its own distinctive and savory flavor. Next came steamed mussels over spaghetti with a white wine sauce that was so good I embarrassed my wife by sipping the sauce from the plate. She had a rigatoni dish served with a red wine cream sauce that was sinfully delicious. We shared a small salad that had a homemade dressing which we suggested they bottle and sell. Fortunately we had a little room left for dessert. You must not leave Sapore’s without trying the ricotta cheesecake. It is to die for. All of the menu dishes are from Enzio’s brought to Sapore’s by Enzio’s daughter Antoinette and executed by she and Chef Oscar Bermudez. I can’t wait to return to try some of their other traditional Southern Italian dishes like veal parmigiana, eggplant rollatine, shrimp al limone, lasagna, manicotti and maybe even a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs. And you can be sure I won’t leave without a piece of the ricotta cheesecake. Sapore’s is located at 1310 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. It’s open seven days a week and has free parking in the rear. I love Mexican food and what I found at El Andariego was the best I’ve had in 30 years. I’m crazy about enchiladas (when they’re done right) and these soft corn tortillas, filled with chicken, cheese or beef , covered with a sumptuous enchilada sauce were delicious. I wasn’t familiar with Salvadorean food, but boy did I get an introduction with a combination platter of papusas, corn tamal, yuca, plaintains and frijoles, beautifully cooked and presented. Everything was so good I thought maybe there were a dozen grandmothers in the kitchen cooking for their families. And, I don’t want to forget the Margaritas and the desserts. The Margaritas are freshly made and you can have the traditional or some with different flavors and different tequilas. The desserts, like everything else including the nacho chips, are homemade….the flan and sopapillas were perfection. The owners of El Andariego are a charming and hospitable couple, Jaime and Christina Vasquez, originally from El Savadore. They opened the restaurant about 10 years ago in the small, country-like town of Ashton, MD, just about 10 minutes off Old Sandy Spring Rd., off Georgia Avenue in Olney, MD. Believe me folks, it’s worth the drive. El Andariego is open seven days a week. For more information, reservations and directions, call 301-260-8199 and check their website at www.elandariego.net. TWB was created 35 years ago by Mary Day and is led today by its outstanding creative director, Septime Webre. “Wonderland” is a collaborative effort by the creative design firm, Design Army, photographer, Cade Martin and TWB dancers. They have put together a truly breathtaking collection of pictures using Washington D.C. and TWB’s studios as backdrops. The book truly captures the spirit of individual artists and the soul of their mission. You can get a copy of “Wonderland” by calling The Washington Ballet at 202-362-3606.
