EL ANDARIEGO RESTAURANT - - Ashton, MD

El Andariego, Ashton, MD (near Olney) is a Mexican and Salvadorean restaurant and I don’t know when I’ve had a more satisfying dinner. I love Mexican food and what I found at El Andariego was the best I’ve had in 30 years. I’m crazy about enchiladas (when they’re done right) and these soft corn tortillas, filled with chicken, cheese or beef , covered with a sumptuous enchilada sauce were delicious. I wasn’t familiar with Salvadorean food, but boy did I get an introduction with a combination platter of papusas, corn tamal, yuca, plaintains and frijoles, beautifully cooked and presented. Everything was so good I thought maybe there were a dozen grandmothers in the kitchen cooking for their families. And, I don’t want to forget the Margaritas and the desserts. The Margaritas are freshly made and you can have the traditional or some with different flavors and different tequilas. The desserts, like everything else including the nacho chips, are homemade….the flan and sopapillas were perfection. The owners of El Andariego are a charming and hospitable couple, Jaime and Christina Vasquez, originally from El Savadore. They opened the restaurant about 10 years ago in the small, country-like town of Ashton, MD, just about 10 minutes off Old Sandy Spring Rd., off Georgia Avenue in Olney, MD.
